OILS and ACRYLICS - ALL SKILL LEVELS WELCOME!
You’ll experience fun and humorous instruction. No stress. I’ll be sharing all the basics of plein air painting and then some. I’ll do a demo in the morning and you’ll have painting time at your easel in the afternoon.
I’ll cover:
Painting gear/set up
Composition
The importance of thumbnail sketches. You’ll learn a quick and easy way to do them.
How to quickly capture your subject matter when painting outdoors.
We’ll cover how to simplify the values
Color Theory
Helpful tools& techniques when Plein Air painting
How to capture the light & shadows
Traveling with your gear

Portable / Plein Air Easel
Panels to paint on (8x10 - 9x12)
Brushes - Bristles in a few different sizes. 4,6,8 are good sizes. Just something around those sizes will do.
Paint - Most of my paint is Gamblin or Windsor & Newton. These are the basic colors. You can bring
others if you like in addition to these.
Container for OPT
Palette knife - long trowel shape
Paper towels
Plastic bag for trash
Hat with a brim if out in the sun
Sunscreen
Bug spray
Ziplock bag (to clean brushes)
Baby oil or Safflower oil (to clean brushes)
Water Bottle
Camera or smart phone
Apron
Jacket
Rain poncho if needed
Backpack or cart or something to carry all your supplies.
Small sketchbook
Viewfinder - I like the one from guerrillapainter.com called “Composition Finder”
Bungee cords & clamps are always good to have
Disposable gloves
Small cooler for any drinks or snacks you may want to have
Umbrella (optional) - If you have one that attaches to an easel. Don’t go to this expense unless you feel
you’ll be doing a lot of plein air painting.
Panel Carrier (optional) - RayMart Art has great panel carriers.
Its preferred that you wear a dark or light colored shirt. Just don’t wear a bright colored shirt. I’ll explain
why at the workshop.

- Cadmium Red Light
- Alizarin Crimson (student grade is ok for this color)
- Burnt Sienna
- Ultra Marine Blue (student grade is ok for this color)
- Cobalt Blue
- Sap Green (student grade is ok for this color)
