Encaustic and Cold Wax painting have seen a significant surge in popularity among artists in recent years, driven by the unique visual and tactile qualities of wax. Artists are drawn to the luminous surfaces, intriguing textures, and complex depth that can only be achieved with wax-based paints.
Michelle Belto, a nationally recognized teacher in encaustic and cold wax, has searched for ways to merge these two mediums in her work. Her discovery of water-soluble wax materials not only allows for a mixed application of hot wax and cold wax, but also promotes a safer and more environmentally friendly approach to potentially hazardous materials. By addressing the common challenges of heating equipment, ventilation, and solvent toxicity, water-soluble encaustic mediums provide a reassuring and responsible alternative for artists.
This three-day workshop, suitable for students of all skill levels, is designed to be interactive. Michelle will give a brief presentation and demonstration each day, addressing the differences and similarities of water-based materials to traditional encaustic and cold wax. This will be followed by directed experiments on sample panels. The workshop encourages discussion, questions, and sharing, as an integral part of the class to foster a collaborative learning environment.
Over the course of this three-day workshop, participants will have the opportunity to fully explore the potential of these versatile materials. Through experimentation and guided practice, they will discover new techniques and ways to express their artistic vision. Students can expect to take home sample paintings in both encaustic and cold wax along with their own experiments and notes to have a personal structure for moving their work forward.
