Join us for an inspiring, hands-on workshop with artist Sue Conner at the New Braunfels Art League, where you’ll dive into the expressive art of mark making and stitching to tell your unique story. In this workshop, participants will create a beautiful fabric scroll that communicates a personal narrative through symbols, colors, and textures that are meaningful to them.
The process will begin with an exploration of your own personal "language" of symbols, lines, shapes, and colors. You’ll craft your own mark-making tools and handmade brushes, followed by experimenting with photo-printed and hand-painted fabrics. Guided by Sue, you’ll combine these elements with hand-stitched techniques to construct a unique scroll that becomes a visual story, capturing memories, emotions, and identity.
Workshop Highlights:
  • Personal Symbol Library: Begin by brainstorming significant colors, symbols, shapes, and themes that represent important moments, people, and places in your life.
  • Handmade Brush Creation: Design and build your own custom brushes for unique mark making.
  • Mark Making Exploration: Use brushes and a variety of tools to create marks on cloth that reflect your personal symbols and shapes.
  • Surface Printing: Print on alternative surfaces such as cotton, organza, and other materials to add layers to your story.
  • Intent and Composition: Discuss the purpose behind each element and how to bring them together in a meaningful composition.
  • Simple Stitch Techniques: Learn 3-4 basic stitches that will help bring your scroll to life.
  • Scroll Assembly: Assemble and stitch your fabric pieces into a finished scroll that embodies your personal narrative.
The workshop offers students a chance to connect with their inner voice, to experiment and embrace the tactile language of fabric and fiber, and to create a piece that is both deeply personal and visually compelling. The workshop will end with a collaborative circle where participants can share their completed scrolls, exchange insights, and celebrate each unique story.
